Middle School and Hillside Innovation Academy (HIA) 7th-grade students took part in HISPA (Hispanics Inspiring Students' Performance and Achievement) Imagine Day - A Corporate Visit! at @keanuniversity. HISPA is a nonprofit organization that inspires Latino students to discover their potential and ignite their desire to embrace education and achieve success! Students heard from a variety of speakers in the morning and then went into breakout sessions for workshops and further mentoring/educational experiences! At W.O.K. Middle School, in Language Arts with Ms. Awad, and Ms. Cheung, students studied the gruesome, yet true story of Phineas Gage which was used to teach students about brain science! As the final project, W.O.K. Scholars created a 2D or 3D model of a brain, along with a guide to further their understanding! Additionally, students in other Language Arts classes were able to view, critique, and vote on their favorite brain! Last night, the ESL and World Language Departments in collaboration with William Colon, the president of the Latino Institute, Inc hosted two parent advisory meetings. Presenters Trinidad De la Rosa discussed building healthy study habits at home while attorney Fernando Jimenez, Esq offered his expertise on immigration rights to Hillside Public School parents. W.O.K. Middle School hosted a phenomenal Black History Month Assembly today, (February 27th, 2025)! The theme of today's program was "African-Americans and the Labor Movement, The fight for economic independence." W.O.K.'s auditorium was packed with students, parents, families, staff, dignitaries, Hillside Board of Education members, and more! Today's program featured performances from the W.O.K. Choir, the Wildcat Dance Ensemble, the Poetic Group, and the W.O.K. Strings Ensemble! Congratulations to the W.O.K. Black History Month Artwork Presenters Dave Vital and Witzar Platel. Shout out to Ms. Thomas who was awarded the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Service Award, and Hillside Board of Education President Ms. Laquana Best who was awarded the Shirley Chisholm Impact Award ! On Saturday, January 18th, 2025, Hillside Public Schools District hosted its Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Program at Hillside High School. The program was amazing not only because of the exceptional performances by each of our schools' students, as well as the decorative artwork done by Hillside Innovation Academy students, but also because of the high positive energy of the audience! The auditorium was full of parents, Hillside community members, Hillside Board of Education members, Hillside Town Council members, families, staff, and more! Great work to all of our students, including Hillside High School Senior Sarah Auguste who was the Mistress of Ceremonies for the event! Shout out to Superintendent Glover, Hillside Board of Education President Ms. Best, U.S. Congresswoman LaMonica McIver, Hillside High School Vice-Principals Mrs. Bartholomew and Mr. Emenaka, who all spoke at the ceremony.
